Bota leads Control Risks’ analytical coverage of Ukraine and Russia and contributes to coverage of the broader post-Soviet region. She specialises in geopolitical and political risk advisory, regulatory and policy analysis, and market entry strategy. She helps clients navigate key risks and opportunities in the region by providing tailored reports, scenarios, and briefings in response to specific queries and by producing analysis for our online subscription services.  

Recent tasks that Bota has worked on include:

  • Control Risks’ Ukraine-Russia Monitor, focusing on the war as well as its global and regional implications for geopolitical tensions, markets, and operations 
  • Five-year scenarios for the Russia-Ukraine war for a client in the extractives sector interested in understanding future exposure to sanctions regimes targeting Russia 
  • Assessment of the Russia-Ukraine war’s economic impact on Ukraine and Moldova, as well as key investment opportunities in these countries 
  • Evaluation of election-related threats across several post-Soviet countries for an international technology company 
  • Analysis of regulatory and operational conditions in Kazakhstan’s mining sector for an Australian company 
  • Before joining Control Risks, Bota helped build negotiation workshops focused on geopolitical crisis scenarios at Negotiation Design & Strategy in Boston. Prior to that, she worked on human rights and civil society projects for non-profits in Central Asia and contributed to a published report while interning at the Peace Research Institute in Frankfurt, Germany. 

    Bota has an MA in Russian and Eastern European studies from Harvard University with a focus on comparative politics and economics of the region.  

    She speaks English, Russian, and Kazakh.
