Based in London, Bota supports clients on political, regulatory, integrity, and operational issues across the former Soviet Union, particularly Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, Moldova, and Kazakhstan. She helps clients identify and mitigate key risks and opportunities in these countries by providing tailored reports and consultations in response to specific queries, as well as writing forward-looking articles for the company’s online subscription services.  

Recent tasks that Bota has worked on include:

  • The Ukraine-Russia monitor focused on the course of the conflict as well as its global and regional implications for geopolitical order, markets, and security
  • Scenario planning support for numerous multinational clients in response to the Russian military buildup near Ukraine and the subsequent war in Ukraine
  • Supporting various multinational clients considering resuming operations in Ukraine amid the conflict
  • An assessment of the Russia-Ukraine war’s economic impact on Ukraine and Moldova, as well as key investment opportunities in these countries
  • An assessment of election-related threats across several post-Soviet countries for an international technology company
  • An assessment of regulatory, operational, and security conditions in Kazakhstan’s mining sector for an Australian company

  • Before joining Control Risks, Bota helped build negotiation workshops focused on geopolitical crisis scenarios at Negotiation Design & Strategy in Boston. Prior to that, she worked on human rights and civil society projects for non-profits in Central Asia, as well as contributed to two published reports while interning at Peace Research Institute in Frankfurt, Germany.

    Bota has a master's degree in Russian and Eastern European studies from Harvard University focused on comparative politics and economics of the region. She speaks English, Russian, and Kazakh.
