Nicolás Urrutia is a Director in Control Risks’ Compliance, Forensics and Intelligence practice for the Andean region. He is based in Bogotá, where he leads the corporate investigations team. In this role, he conducts investigative work in Colombia, Peru, Venezuela, Ecuador and Bolivia across industries including energy, manufacturing, construction, transportation, telecommunications and mass consumer products, among others.

Recent tasks that Nicolás has worked on include:

  • A covert investigation into potential fraud committed by employees claiming to have developed health conditions due to alleged exposure to toxic substances
  • An investigation into the theft of proprietary data and equipment from a major law firm
  • An investigation into contracting fraud and theft for a major manufacturing client in Colombia
  • Nicolás is an experienced investigator and an expert on Colombian politics and security. Prior to joining the Compliance, Forensics and Intelligence practice, Nicolas covered the Andean Region as part of Control Risks’ team of global risk analysts. Previously, he served as the independent inspector general for Colombia’s National Intelligence Department, where he conducted investigations into alleged wrongdoing in intelligence programs and operations. He also co-founded a boutique consulting firm specializing in national security affairs and helped establish the security and defense branch of a leading public policy think tank. 

    Nicolás holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in international relations with a focus on international security from Stanford University and a master’s degree in political science from the Universidad de los Andes. He also attended the general and flag officer course at Colombia’s National War College.
