Nicolás is an expert on Colombian politics and security, and provides clients with advice and analysis on Colombia, Peru and Suriname. He conducts political, social and security risk assessments, designs scenarios to assist in strategic planning, and advises clients in the oil and gas, mining, energy, infrastructure, technology and life sciences industries, among others.

Nicolás is an expert on Colombian politics and security, and provides clients with advice and analysis on Colombia, Peru and Suriname. He conducts political, social and security risk assessments, designs scenarios to assist in strategic planning, and advises clients in the oil and gas, mining, energy, infrastructure, technology and life sciences industries, among others.


Nicolás’ recent projects include:
  • Conducting geopolitical risk assessment on Colombia’s oil and gas sector for a financial client looking to invest in a joint venture.The management and delivery of a global cyber security threat and risk assessment for a leading financial services provider. 
  • Assessing security risks, including social unrest, terrorism and violent labour disputes across different mining sites in Colombia, Peru and Suriname for major international insurance companies.
  • Conducting market-entry analysis of political and social risks for a financial client looking to invest in major infrastructure projects in Peru.


Prior to joining Control Risks, Nicolás served as the independent Inspector General for Colombia’s National Intelligence Department, co-founded a boutique consulting firm specialising in national security affairs, and helped establish the security and defense branch of a leading public policy think tank. He has published a number of scholarly articles and opinion pieces on Colombian national security, and he is a frequent university lecturer. In addition to his experience in Colombia, Nicolás has conducted work in Brazil, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, the US, the UK and Belgium. He is fluent in Spanish, Portuguese and French.

Nicolás holds a Bachelor of Arts in international relations with a focus on international security from Stanford University, a Master’s in political science from the Universidad de los Andes, and he completed the general and flag-officer course at Colombia’s National War College.
