Based in London, Busani leads our Intelligence & Investigations practice for sub‑Saharan Africa. He helps clients build a clear, evidence‑based picture of investment targets, partners and operating environments in markets where reliable public information is limited.
His work is human intelligence-led, combining discreet, on-the-ground source enquiries with rigorous analysis to build insight that is not accessible through public or desk-based research alone. He supports high-value transactions and market entry decisions, particularly for private equity and infrastructure investors. His work provides clients with decision-ready intelligence derived from real-world insight, not just reported information.
Clients value Busani’s legal grounding, regional expertise and practical experience in complex environments. His calm, structured approach cuts through ambiguity, identifies what really matters and drives outcomes. He connects risk to commercial priorities, ensuring recommendations are both credible and actionable - informing investment committee decisions, shaping deal strategy and supporting risk mitigation plans.
Recent engagements include:
- Conducting a multi‑jurisdictional investigation into alleged corruption and FCPA exposure for an Africa‑focused investment firm, enabling the client to assess the credibility of the allegations and underlying conduct and providing a clear view of enforcement risk and a defensible position for decision-making and stakeholder engagement.
- Supporting an investor on pre‑investment due diligence into politically exposed telecoms assets in Southern Africa. Busani identified integrity and political exposure risks not apparent from public sources through on-the-ground enquiries, enabling the client to reassess risk, refine deal strategy and avoid potential downstream exposure.
- Leading a complex investigation into alleged bribery and regulatory misconduct in Central Africa’s extractives sector, helping the client understand operating realities and determine whether risk could be mitigated or a change in approach was required.
Prior to joining Control Risks, Busani managed a leading transportation and construction company in Zimbabwe, supervising numerous road construction projects. Busani has also worked as a legal advisor in South Africa and Zimbabwe and holds a LLB degree from the University of Cape Town, as well as an LLM in Banking and Finance (with distinction) from Queen Mary, University of London. His fluency in indigenous Southern African languages enables deeper engagement, cultural understanding and credibility with local stakeholders.
