John is a Director in Control Risks’ Business Intelligence team, based in Dubai. He manages investigations across multiple sectors in the MENA region, and has extensive experience in the mining, defence, energy and infrastructure sectors. Over the past decade, John has overseen complex projects across the Middle East, North Africa and sub-Saharan Africa, focussing on helping clients navigate market-entry challenges, particularly when dealing with governmental and quasi-governmental investors.

Recent projects John has worked on include:

  • Assisting a mining sector client in assessing political and corruption risks associated with entering a high-risk jurisdiction and providing mitigation strategies.
  • Advising a defence sector client on navigation tender processes in a new market while mitigating corruption risk. 
  • Developing a risk matrix for a regional oil company that analysed physical and business risks, alongside a plan to address them.
  • Conducting a market-entry study for a multinational construction company exploring operations in a high-risk country with significant corruption challenges.
  • John began his career with the US government, serving 15 years, including multiple overseas postings. Since then, he has held roles advising clients on mitigating physical security and business risks, primarily in sub-Saharan Africa. John holds a doctorate in African Politics from the University of South Africa and has authored or co-authored several publications, including African Security: An Introduction (2020).
