Tom Newell is an Associate Director covering Greater China and North Asia. Based in Hong Kong, he is responsible for consulting on crisis management, physical security, business continuity and complex problem-solving.

Tom began his career as an analyst in the Control Risks’ crisis response practice, tasked with providing analytical support to consultants deployed on active kidnap and extortion cases. He subsequently held security consulting roles in both London and Singapore, conducting a wide variety of risk management tasks on-the-ground in more than 20 countries across Europe, Africa and Asia.

Recent tasks that Tom has worked on include:

  • Developing a security governance framework for a Malaysia-based energy provider. Following the successful delivery of this project, Control Risks was engaged to create detailed standards and lead the physical security design of critical hydropower infrastructure.
  • Leading corporate crisis management planning and workshops for a pharmaceutical company in Singapore.
  • Conducting investigative interviews and physical security assessments at a manufacturing plant in Vietnam following allegations of insider malfeasance.
  • Providing an extractives company in the Philippines with a detailed threat, vulnerability and risk assessment of proposed mining operations.
  • Conducting physical penetration tests for a highly critical data centre facility in Taiwan.
  • Tom returned to Control Risks in 2023 after several years working in-house as a regional security manager for one of the largest US banks and a leading European insurance company. He holds an MSc in Security Studies from University College London along with certifications in corporate security management and maritime security. In addition to his native English, he speaks French and German.
