Raul Gallegos is an Associate Director for Control Risks. He leads the Global Risk Analysis practice in the Andean region, and is an acclaimed expert on Venezuela. Raul provides clients with a view of future economic, political and security risks and how they may impact businesses in the Andean region.

Highlights of Raul’s recent projects include:

  • Strategic intelligence and stakeholder mapping for a global asset manager seeking to invest in a utilities company in Colombia. The analysis included a look at stakeholders that could influence and place obstacles to investment in the utilities industry.
  • A threat assessment for an oil and gas exploration company deploying personnel to Venezuela. The assessment focused on the principal security threats and analysis of red flag areas that would expose executives to political protests and criminal activity.
  • A detailed review of how companies operating in Colombia can turn political, economic and social risks into business opportunities in a post-war scenario, supposing a peace accord is signed between the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, FARC.

Raul previously worked as a contributing analyst for the Economist Intelligence Unit, as a featured Latin America columnist for Bloomberg, and as a financial columnist for Thomson Reuters. For five years, Raul served as the Caracas-based oil correspondent for Dow Jones and the Wall Street Journal where he also covered OPEC meetings in Vienna. He led a team of journalists covering Wall Street for Institutional Investor in New York. He is the author of Crude Nation: How Oil Riches Ruined Venezuela (Potomac Books 2016).

Raul holds a BA in Economics from the University of California at Berkeley, a master’s degree from the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University, and a master’s from Columbia’s Graduate School of Journalism. He was a 2010 Knight-Bagehot Fellow at the Columbia Business School.
