Michael is the Associate Director of the Special Risks Analysis (SRA) team, which tracks kidnapping-for-ransom and other extortive crime trends globally as part of Control Risks’ Confidential Crisis Response practice. Michael’s primary responsibility is to manage the SRA team’s delivery of intelligence support for active kidnapping-for-ransom, extortion, or other acute crises globally. Michael regularly provides clients with bespoke analysis on kidnap-for-ransom and extortion trends assessing their individual risk exposure, in addition to managing a range of special risks consultancy projects.

Recent tasks that Michael has worked on include:

  • Delivering a briefing on global kidnapping trends, with a focus on Islamist extremist kidnapping of westerners, to a conference organised jointly by the charity Hostage International and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.
  • Project managing the delivery of weekly and monthly intelligence reports on kidnapping threats in Nigeria to a major oil and gas client.
  • Providing a series of detailed written briefings on kidnap and extortion threats across a range of countries globally, tailored to the risk profile of a large-scale multinational retailer.
  • Michael previously served on the SRA team as a Senior Analyst covering the EMEA region, as well as an Analyst covering Europe and Africa. Prior to joining Control Risks, Michael worked as an intelligence analyst for a crisis response consultancy, supporting crisis response cases as well as wider investigations and risk consultancy projects. Michael holds an MSc in International Politics from Trinity College Dublin and a BA (Hons) in Politics and International Studies from the University of Warwick.
