Michael is Director of Special Risks Analysis (SRA) at Control Risks, based in London. Drawing on extensive experience in crisis response as both an analyst and a team leader, he has supported clients through some of the most significant international crises. His work focuses on delivering actionable intelligence in situations where facts on the ground change rapidly.
He leads the SRA team's intelligence support for active crisis response cases, overseeing its proactive consulting service. The team provides actionable ground-level intelligence to Control Risks’ response consultants deployed on kidnap, extortion, behavioural threat and arbitrary detention cases.
Clients typically engage Michael with one of two needs: when they are facing an active incident and require intelligence support alongside operational response consultants, or when they want to assess extortive crime threats to their people and operations pre-emptively, whether for existing sites or as part of a market entry assessment.
In addition, Michael supports Control Risks’ insurance partner, Hiscox, by briefing underwriting teams and brokers on emerging extortive crime trends through written reports and in-person presentations.
Recent engagements include:
- Creating a global register of detention risks for an agribusiness client with operations worldwide
- Building and delivering a live kidnap data dashboard for a multinational client's internal intelligence team
- Providing in-depth threat assessments for a multinational client assessing kidnap and extortion threats to its operations in ten countries
Michael holds an MSc in International Relations from Trinity College Dublin, a BA (Hons) in Politics and International Studies from the University of Warwick and a Corporate Crisis Management certification from the Management and Strategy Institute.
