Patrick is a Senior Consultant in Control Risks’ business intelligence practice for the Russia and CIS region. He works closely with Control Risks’ clients and their external counsel to ensure compliance with sanctions imposed against Russia. Patrick has also developed customised research methodologies to determine his clients’ exposure to unpredictable political dynamics in Russia’s neighbours, notably Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and Azerbaijan.

Recent tasks that Patrick has worked on include:

  • Multiple investigations into low-profile and newly incorporated oil trading companies to determine the existence of any sanctions violations and map suspected relationships to oil producers in Russia and other sanctioned trading companies
  • Shareholder and Ultimate Beneficial Owner mapping of 37 Russian financial services companies with equal voting rights in a Russian professional association to determine whether the association could be considered a sanctioned entity
  • Interviews with industry specialists and political insiders in Kazakhstan following a major domestic political shake-up to establish political risks for one of the country’s largest mining and metals groups
  • Business intelligence and threat assessment exercise to determine whether a series of scandalous media allegations raised against a Ukrainian businessman and parliamentary deputy were true
  • Prior to joining Control Risks, Patrick spent ten years living in Russia and working in journalism, broadcast media, and political analysis.

Patrick holds a BA in History from Leeds, an MA in International Relations from the Moscow Higher School of Economics, and an MA in Politics and Security Studies from University College London.

Along with his native English, Patrick speaks fluent Russian.
