John is a Principal in Control Risks’ Crisis and Security Consulting team.
He leverages 30 years of experience in both the public and private sectors to support a broad range of stakeholders. He has expertise helping organizations manage a range of complex challenges related to terrorism, violent extremism, active assailants, workplace violence, high-risk terminations, insider threats, stalking, and harassment.
Recent tasks that John has worked on include:
- Assisting clients across industries and sectors with their efforts to build best in class workplace violence prevention programs, connecting cross-functional stakeholders, improving threat identification through proactive intelligence collection, enhancing person of interest (POI) investigative capabilities, building playbooks for internal threat management teams, and providing ongoing threat advisory support to teams for more complex and challenging situations
- Developing and leading bespoke training programs and tabletop exercises for clients to improve capabilities and identify opportunities related to workplace violence, active assailant prevention, and crisis management response
- Working with clients to develop emergency response plans and playbooks related to active assailants and workplace violence more broadly
- Leading the integration of an enterprise-wide corporate security strategy, countering a variety of threats, creating multidisciplinary threat assessment and management teams, and modernizing workplace violence prevention programs
- Strategically navigating change for a broad range of security functions, intelligence, threat management, and travel for more than 60,000 employees across a network of farms, manufacturing facilities, distribution centers and corporate offices
- Leading the FBI’s Behavioral Threat Assessment Center: a world-renowned, multi-agency, multidisciplinary task force focused on the prevention of terrorism and targeted violence through the application of behaviorally-based operational support, training, and research
- Developing and leading the FBI’s national strategy to identify and mitigate threats presented by non-traditional threat actors, including through the creation of new investigative and legal policies, training, capacity building, and novel cooperation between interagency partners
- Co-Authoring The Lone Offender Terrorism Report (2020), editing Beyond Belief: Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism in America (2025) and serving as the supervising authority for A Study of Pre-attack Behaviors of Active Shooters in the U.S. (2018)
- Developing and overseeing a broad range of strategies while leading counterterrorism operations, both domestically and abroad, within the FBI's multiple field offices and during joint duty assignments, resulting in disrupted attacks, mitigated threats, and convictions
Prior to joining Control Risks, John was Director of Security Intelligence and Investigations for a Fortune 200 animal agriculture and food manufacturing corporation. Earlier in his career, he concluded an accomplished tenure in the FBI, where he led high-performing teams conducting investigations and operations focused on counterterrorism and targeted violence prevention.
He is a three-time recipient of the prestigious FBI Director’s Award. He is a certified insider threat program manager (CERT-InTP), trained in Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) protocols, an active member of the Association of Threat Assessment Professionals (ATAP) and the American Society of Industrial Security (ASIS).
He holds a B.S. in Commerce with a concentration in Finance from the University of Virginia.
