Based in Washington, DC, John is a Principal in our Advisory and Risk Consulting practice. With more than 30 years of experience including with the FBI and in executive security roles, he specializes in helping organizations navigate complex, people-centered risks, including workplace violence, terrorism, insider threats and targeted violence.
John is widely recognized for his expertise in behavioral threat assessment and management (BTAM). He works closely with large, complex organizations to design and implement programs that proactively identify and mitigate risks before they escalate.
Clients turn to John when facing high-risk, high-uncertainty situations involving employees, customers or external actors, as well as broader concerns around preparedness and organizational resilience. He is known for bringing clarity, structure and calm judgment to complex and sensitive cases.
Recent engagements include:
- Leading a review of a global healthcare client’s security and threat management programs following a workplace violence incident and threats to senior executives. The engagement included stakeholder interviews, process review and assessment of workplace violence prevention, executive protection, travel risk and event security capabilities. Advisory support continues around threat management optimization and development of an integrated global intelligence operations center
- Leading a multi-phase engagement with a professional services client to strengthen resilience, crisis management and workplace violence prevention. The work included a physical security assessment, executive-level crisis exercise and active assailant response training for staff and partners. Ongoing support has included threat assessments, law enforcement guidance and executive protection support in response to threats targeting colleagues and senior leadership
- Leading a review of a global energy corporation’s insider threat and workplace violence prevention programs. The engagement informed a threat management framework and training for multidisciplinary team members. Advisory support continues through a threat management retainer focused on case consultation, program refinement and implementation
- Leading an evaluation of a global technology client’s crisis management capabilities to develop active assailant playbooks for executive and local teams. The engagement included tabletop exercises to pressure-test the playbooks at both levels. After-action reporting identified lessons learned, strengthened response coordination and guided future program refinement
John’s professional approach was shaped by the experience of leading the FBI’s Behavioral Threat Assessment Center (BTAC), where he developed and scaled behavior-based strategies to prevent terrorism and targeted violence at a national level. This experience now informs his focus on early intervention, multidisciplinary coordination and practical application implementation.
He is a Certified Insider Threat Program Manager (CERT-InTP), has completed Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) and is an active member of both the Association of Threat Assessment Professionals (ATAP) and ASIS International.
