Arran is a Researcher for the maritime intelligence and security practice, within our geopolitical and strategic risk advisory team. He advises clients on threats to commercial shipping and offshore operations, including war, piracy and armed robbery at sea, terrorism, activism, and drug smuggling. Arran contributes analysis to Control Risks’ subscription services and delivers bespoke consultancy projects, collaborating with the firm’s country experts worldwide.
Recent tasks that Arran has worked on include:
- Conducting threat assessments for vessel transits, energy assets, and offshore projects across regions such as the Gulf of Guinea, Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, Middle East Gulf, Baltic Sea, Black Sea, East Africa, Southeast Asia, Gulf of Mexico and South America.
- Contributing to expert witness reports for legal disputes involving port calls to Ukraine amid Russia’s invasion and Red Sea transits following the Houthis’ maritime attacks.
- Delivering oral briefings on maritime security issues to a major oil and gas company.
- Investigating vessel ownership structures and movement behaviour for pre-transaction due diligence reports, working alongside our Business Intelligence teams.
- Supporting Control Risks’ Ukraine-Russia and Israel-Hamas Monitors by analysing the impact of those conflicts - including security, sanctions, and regulatory developments - on regional and global shipping.
Prior to joining Control Risks, Arran interned at a maritime intelligence firm while completing his Master’s in Intelligence and International Security at King’s College London. Arran is an accredited Company Security Officer (CSO). He is regularly cited in maritime industry publications and has appeared on Control Risks’ Global Insight podcast. Arran also holds a Bachelor's degree in Economics and Politics from the University of Leeds.
