James leads our business and human rights team, which helps clients successfully navigate the increasingly complex and demanding corporate sustainability landscape. The team provides practical and innovative support to companies as they deal with the rapid and consequential changes in regulations and stakeholder expectations. The team draws on the Control Risks' global footprint to assist clients in even the most challenging situations.
Recent tasks that James has worked on include:
- Preparing a US based energy company for the requirements of the EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD).
- Undertaking a human rights impact assessment (HRIA) for a company in the Japanese automotive sector.
- Devising a novel human rights saliency methodology for a global mining company.
James was previously Director of Human Rights at a global risk analytics firm and co-founder of a UN Award winning fair labour company and founder of a law firm. He was based in the Middle East for a decade, engaging in Iraq, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Nepal, India and East Africa.
James is a practising English Solicitor and holds a PhD in International Human Rights Law and Political Economy from King’s College London. He also holds an MA in International Relations, a BA in Philosophy Politics and Economics and various post graduate legal qualifications.
James has contributed to various books and peer-reviewed journals on business and human rights issues and is an experienced media performer, conference panellist and public speaker.
