Following an acquisition, the corporate landscape is rarely calm. For one major international oil and gas operator in Nigeria, an internal restructuring heightened executive risk as disenfranchised stakeholders turned their attention to the company’s most visible assets: its CEO and senior leadership team.
Executives moving between offices, residences and meeting rooms were suddenly exposed. The company needed more than standard security protocols. It needed to understand who was watching, what they were capable of and how to stay ahead of them without disrupting operations.
Understanding the risk environment
Control Risks conducted detailed personal threat and vulnerability assessments for each executive, combining two critical lenses:
- Online exposure analysis: mapping digital footprints that could allow threat actors to track movements, predict routines or gather intelligence
- Physical risk evaluation: scrutinising every touchpoint in the executives' daily lives, including homes, offices, vehicles and transit routes
We identified specific threat actors, their intent and their capability, and uncovered potential attack vectors, the moments and locations where executives were most exposed. Crucially, we did not stop at the initial assessment. We maintained continuous monitoring to track any escalation in behaviour, shifts in intent or signs that the threat was evolving.
Personal threat and vulnerability assessments, movement and location threat assessments and event security planning were conducted daily. All movement and activity were continually evaluated to maintain safety and security at all times.
An intelligence-led strategy
With a clear understanding of the risk landscape, we designed a protection programme that was anchored in intelligence:
- Residential security was calibrated to the specific vulnerabilities of each executive's home
- Office protection was reinforced where exposure was highest
- Transportation requirements were re-evaluated, leading to the deployment of B6 armoured vehicles for high-risk movements
- Technical security controls and IT penetration testing were implemented to close digital vulnerabilities that could be exploited by threat actors
The result was a framework that enabled objective, informed decision-making without the uncertainty of fear or speculation.
On the ground, the programme came to life through a dedicated team of trained local executive protection officers who understood the terrain, culture and subtle indicators that outsiders would likely miss. They were supported by continuous intelligence updates and real-time threat monitoring, allowing the response to adapt as conditions evolved.
The risk environment required the support from multiple Control Risks practice areas. Delivery was 24/7 across various jurisdictions and co-ordinated from a West African operations centre.
