This client was designing a robust and scalable security framework for a greenfield data centre campus, delivering 6GW of capacity for AI infrastructure. Regulatory expectations and operational complexity were high.

A comprehensive approach

Control Risks developed and implemented an end-to-end integrated security framework that covered physical, digital and governance layers. The framework aligned with key standards, including FedRAMP, ISO/IEC 27001, and relevant physical security benchmarks.

Resilience was embedded from day one. The client now had a future-proofed, compliance-aligned framework to enable growth. They had a phased design and implementation roadmap to follow, along with a resourcing strategy and risk-based prioritisation. A leading hyperscaler required high-quality threat and risk intelligence to protect its facilities across the United States and internationally. With a complex global footprint and a growing risk profile, the client needed a trusted partner to provide embedded, integrated support that could identify vulnerabilities before they were exploited. 

Exposing real-world vulnerabilities

To extend the client’s security function, Control Risks deployed two embed teams of 19 specialists, including risk analysts and Red Team testers. These teams conducted physical security reviews and live intrusion tests to expose real-world vulnerabilities.

Risk identification to active mitigation 

This seamless extension of the hyperscaler’s security team ensured the safety of their facilities, allowing them to not only identify risks but actively mitigate them.

This client was designing a hyperscale data centre campus comprising multiple new-build facilities.

A multi-layered security approach

Our team collaborated with the client to design each data centre with a multi-layered security approach, incorporating physical and electronic security measures, from the core data halls to critical communications and plant rooms.

Key security features for each facility included enhanced access control at loading bays and pedestrian entrances, manual attack-resistant perimeter fencing, gates and turnstiles, perimeter intrusion detection systems and video surveillance, and dedicated security monitoring rooms in each building.

At the campus level, a secure perimeter was established with hostile vehicle mitigation (HVM) measures, centralised vehicle and pedestrian access control points, and campus-wide surveillance and detection systems – all managed by a central security control room.
