Supporting clients in Haiti

Following the magnitude 7.0 earthquake in Haiti on 12 January, in conjunction with our Joint Venture Partners International SOS, Control Risks deployed an Incident Management Team to provide emergency evacuation and medical support to clients impacted by the quake.

The earthquake in Haiti killed an estimated 200,000 people, a further 250,000 were injured and more than 1.5 million people were left homeless. Damage to buildings and infrastructure was widespread, essential services were severely disrupted, and an already fractious security environment was further enflamed.

For those organisations with operations in Haiti, the priority was to first find their employees and second to assess damage to their assets. Communications problems made tracking employees extremely difficult, whilst the sheer scale of the destruction made travel around much of the country complex and often dangerous.

On hearing news of the earthquake, Control Risks and our joint venture partner for the provision of travel security services,
International SOS immediately activated a crisis management team, and within two hours had sent teams of medical, security, aviation and logistics experts to Haiti. These consultants were deployed to support both clients with people trapped in Haiti, and
representatives from aid agencies, relief workers and the media who needed to secure safe passage to and around Haiti.

In the immediate aftermath of the quake, there were three main strands to our support:

  1. Identifying those organisations with people in the affected
    areas
  2. Evacuating individuals and providing emergency medical
    support
  3. Providing security and life support services to clients either
remaining in or arriving in Haiti
