Ryan Murphy is a Principal in Control Risks’ Compliance, Forensics and Intelligence practice. He manages complex investigations in the US and Canada focused on companies and individuals in a wide range of industries including the financial, energy, legal, and entertainment sectors. 

Recent tasks that Ryan has worked on include:

  • Assisting an extractives industry client in identifying and engaging with key local stakeholders as part of a closure review. Conducted on-site interviews, along with targeted online research, in order to assist the client in developing an effective strategy for engaging with local landowners, regulators, and other relevant individuals and organizations.
  • Conducting an extensive threat assessment on behalf of an ultra-high-net-worth individual; analyzing potential areas of exposure of the individual and his family online and in the broader public record, as well as assessing their online threat profile and identifying any active or implied threats to their well-being.
  • Assisting a major financial services company in identifying the assets of a foreign national residing in the United States as part of an ongoing legal proceeding; determining the extent to which this individual had attempted to conceal his US property holdings through transfers to various family members, corporate entities and trusts.
  • Identifying the key activist, regulatory and NGO stakeholders in a major oil pipeline project for a client in the private equity space; profiling each of these stakeholders and determining the intent and capability of each to impact the project going forward.

  • Before joining Control Risks, Ryan worked for a political opposition research firm in Austin, Texas where he performed extensive research on officeholders and candidates, producing comprehensive reports and recommendations used by campaign strategists. Prior to this, Ryan worked as a legislative aide to a member of the Texas House of Representatives, specializing in transportation and education issues, and as a field organizer and fundraiser during the 2004 US presidential election.

    Ryan holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from the University of Texas at Austin, where he graduated with Liberal Arts Honors.
