Based in Shanghai, Michael leads a team of consultants with responsibility for supporting Chinese and Korean clients in foreign countries. This includes market entry studies, security risk consultancy and management, and crisis management.

Prior to taking up his position in China, Michael was Managing Director of Control Risks business in the Australia Pacific region, which includes Papua New Guinea and the South-West Pacific.


Examples of Michael’s work with Control Risks include:
  • Managed security projects for: Australian government aid and diplomatic programmes in Iraq and Afghanistan; energy sector clients in Australia, Papua New Guinea and South-East Asia
  • Mining clients in Africa, South-East Asia and the Pacific
  • Provided risk management consultancy for deep-sea mining projects in the Pacific region
  • Provided crisis management support for a company facing strike action by native workers in Papua New Guinea


    Michael’s first appointment in Control Risks was as practice leader for the business continuity practice. His experience spans most industry sectors with particular expertise in the resources, manufacturing and agribusiness sectors. He has lived and worked in Malaysia, India, the Middle East and now China.

Prior to joining Control Risks, Michael was an officer in the Australian Army. Career highlights included commanding an infantry battalion and secondment to the UN in the Middle East, where he was a senior adviser to the Arab-Israeli conflict management process in 2001-02. He was awarded the Conspicuous Service Cross by the Australian Government for outstanding achievement while seconded to the UN.

Michael has a bachelor’s degree in economic geography from the University of New South Wales, a master’s degree in defence and politics from the University of Madras and a master of business administration from Southern Cross University.
