United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) end of mandate
Libya Libya
UNSMIL’s mandate expires on 31 July. However, international actors are likely to extend the mission’s mandate beyond July to help prevent a return to civil conflict in Libya. The departure of UNSMIL would leave the country with no international mediator to sponsor post-ceasefire political, constitutional and security talks between domestic stakeholders. This situation would likely increase security tensions between militias that support the two rival governments in Sirte and Tripoli that are competing over political power and distribution of hydrocarbon revenues.

Russia/Africa  Ethiopia
The first Russia-Africa Summit was held in Sochi (Russia) in 2019. The second event will be held in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia). This provides Russia another arena to cultivate its pivot away from the West due to recent extreme sanctions. Russia’s economic decline following sanctions means that while already a big investor in the region, there is a greater importance to find alternative markets for its energy, grain and other commodities.
