Career development at Control Risks - a case study

I started working at Control Risks in January 2001, after obtaining my Masters in Latin American Politics. While doing my Masters I had been searching for companies where I could utilise my studies and an introduction to Control Risks’ Research Director led to me joining as a political and security risk analyst on the Americas desk within our Global Risk Analysis team. I was responsible for analysing political and security developments in Latin America for our online information service, Country Risk Forecast, as well as producing customised risk assessments for clients with interests in the region.

After almost five years in our Global Risk Analysis team, a professional opportunity intersected rather fortuitously with my personal life. A desire to move to Australia coincided with an opening in the Sydney office’s Corporate Investigations Practice. I had three months Corporate Investigations training in London before departing for Sydney. As Senior Consultant, I worked on a diverse range of projects including business intelligence reports, due diligence cases and some interesting litigation support matters. One of the most enjoyable parts was the greater exposure that came with working outside of our head office, which later became one of the key drivers behind my move to Delhi.

My next role was as Director, Corporate Investigations, India where I headed up the investigations and business intelligence operations in India and South Asia. Prior to my relocation, I participated in senior management training which gave me a great foundation in leading teams effectively and has proven extremely useful for my new role. We handled a wide variety of assignments from pre-transaction due diligence to asset tracing to fraud investigations and an increasing number of computer forensics cases.

In the run up to my next move to head up Corporate Investigations in Mexico and Colombia, I have just participated in the company’s Talent Programme which supports you in building your future career in Control Risks and develops senior management skills.  It has been a great journey with Control Risks and there have been fantastic experiences along the way. I am greatly looking forward to the next phase and a return to Latin America.
